Common Complaints in Pregnancy

Besides for period of joy in expecting of a child, pregnancy is also often associated with several complaints which are for many women very unpleasant and sometimes even causing severe problems. Fortunately, many of common complaints and complications can be easily prevented or at least reduced if being properly managed early enough.

One of the most common complaints in pregnancy is weight gain which frequently continues to cause difficulties also after childbirth. The developing fetus requires increased caloric intake, while many women still believe they have to eat for two although the recommended weight gain in a healthy pregnancy is about 22-26 pounds (10-12 kilograms).

Besides excessive weight gain which often causes also series of other complaints or worsens them (back pain, stretch marks, itchy skin) pregnant women frequently also complain about morning sickness, urinary frequency, constipation, hemorrhoids, swelling, varicose veins, contractions, regurgitation and heartburn. Many of mentioned complaints have no negative affect on the developing fetus and besides unpleasant and sometimes disturbing sensation also do not have any health consequences for the pregnant woman. Even more, many symptoms fade away on their own such as the morning sickness, while the others can be successfully managed by proper nutrition, exercise and avoiding of factors which worsen certain complaints, for example not wearing high heals if having difficulties with swelling of the ankles. However, it is highly important to pay attention to all changes and symptoms and to visit a doctor regularly to monitor the progress of pregnancy and to prevent eventual complications.
