Physical and Physiological Changes in Pregnancy

Every pregnant woman goes through some physical and physiological changes which greatly vary from woman to woman and depend from several different factors. However, there are some changes which are common in all pregnant women although for some more, for the others less pleasant.

The period of pregnancy is frequently divided into three trimesters during which all women experience more or less pleasant physical and physiological changes which are immediately associated with pregnancy and are either a result of the development and growth or the fetus or are caused by hormonal changes. Thus pregnancy in all women is characterized by the absence of menstrual cycle what is a result of the rising levels of progesterone and estrogens, while hormonal changes are also responsible for enlargement of the breast and darkening of the nipples. Developing fetus results in the enlargement of the belly which becomes more evident as the pregnancy progresses.

Physical and physiological changes during pregnancy are also being often associated with variety of other symptoms such as weight gain, morning sickness, mood swings, stretch marks, back pain, etc. which are at the same time also most common complaints. However, if and in what extent pregnant women experience certain symptoms also greatly depends on their physical and mental condition, age, life style, nutrition, overall health and well-being, etc. but much also depends on pregnancy management. A pregnant woman does not have to "eat for two" like the common saying goes, while many negative impacts of pregnancy can be completely avoided or at least reduced with proper diet, exercise, care, etc. especially if being well informed and educated about pregnancy and its impact on the body.
